Broome County K-9 Locates Magic City Burglary Suspect
At approximately 2:00 AM on November 21, 2004 Broome County Sheriff’s Deputy Daniel J. Balmer and his partner K-9 Luke were requested to assist the Johnson City, New York, Police Department after receiving a burglar alarm at the Magic City Music Hall and discovering signs of a forced entry.
Johnson City Police Officers established a perimeter while a building search for intruders was conducted by Deputy Balmer, K-9 Luke and Johnson City Police Officer Brian Berdine.
Within minutes K-9 Luke alerted to the presence of an intruder hiding in the building. Deputy Balmer and Officer Berdine discovered that K-9 Luke was conducting a bark and hold on the perpetrator.
The perpetrator verbally surrendered and did not move and was subsequently taken into custody without incident by Officer Berdine as K-9 Luke continued guarding him. The perpetrator was charged by Johnson City Police with the crime of Burglary in the Second Degree.
