Binghamton Police K-9 Locates Attempted Robbery Suspects

On September 2nd 2005 at 0339hrs the Binghamton Police Department received a call from a cab driver stating that two white males just tried to rob him. The driver fought back against the would be robbers, before they fled on foot.

Officer Steve Ward and his partner K-9 Rowin responded to the East side of Binghamton and was showed the last place the suspects ran. A perimeter was set up, and K-9 Rowin picked the track up almost immediately. K-9 Rowin pulled Officer Ward thru several back yards and into a vacant lot. When they got to a row of shrubs K-9 Rowin's head came up and he began to indicate someone was there, while officer Ward gave commands to come out, He was advised by the Sgt. parked on Perimeter that a white male matching one of the suspect’s description just came out and he had him in custody. K-9 Rowin continued to Track and pulled Officer Ward down a driveway at 29 Abbott St. K-9 Rowin went all the way to the back of the deep yard where there was a 4 foot chain link fence. Without hesitation K-9 Rowin went up and over the fence and caught his right rear paw on the fence as he was coming down. Rowin began to yipe as Officer Ward freed his foot from the fence. Officer Ward then came over the fence.

As Officer Ward's back up was coming over the fence, K-9 Rowin pulled him toward a shed in another back yard. K-9 Rowin's Head was now up and was pulling hard, indicating to Officer Ward that someone was close by. As Officer Ward approached the shed and checked to make sure no one was inside. As he checked, Officer Ward noticed K-9 Rowin go around the Shed with his ears standing straight up and then Lunge forward. Officer Ward then pulled back as K-9 Rowin was now barking and was agitated. Officer Ward then saw a white male lying on the ground behind the shed. The suspect was ordered out on his stomach and he did comply. Officer Ward's back up took the suspect into custody without incident.

A show up with the cab driver was conducted and he positively identified the two males as the ones who tried to rob him.

At 0407 both subjects were in custody 28 minutes after the original call.
