Police Dog Apprehends Burglary Suspect
Binghamton Police Officer Steve Ward and his K-9 Partner Rowin had been deployed on a track to locate the perpetrator of a Giant Supermarket burglary, tracking for several blocks until crowd contamination occurred. Ward and Rowin were then dispatched to a forced entry burglary of a dry cleaners business. Rowin was deployed for a building search and located the subject standing motionless in the building. Rowin held the subject without biting at which time it was determined that the subject was armed with a hammer. The subject was non compliant and refused to drop his weapon and prone out on the ground. Rowin was ordered to subdue the subject, biting the subject in the lower arm. Rowin was outed and when the subject, who was still armed advanced towards officers Rowin was again ordered to stop the subject, biting him in the leg and holding him until he voluntarily disarmed him self and surrendered to police. The subject apprehended by Rowin was determined to be the perpetrator of the Giant burglary due to proceeds found on his person after his apprehension. The subject whose identity is not currently known was treated at a local hospital during which he stated that if it had not been for the Police Service Dog he would have caused bodily harm to the officers. The subject was released to police custody.
