ENDICOTT -- Two men were arrested and a third person is being sought in connection with a Tuesday morning robbery that ended with a gunshot and a lot of frayed nerves, Endicott police said.

Police investigate a shooting on Harrison Street in Endicott on Tuesday in a residential neighborhood near North Street. The car was later towed away.

No one was struck in the gunplay, but the reported shooting at North Street and Harrison Avenue brought police, including four police dogs and their handlers, from a half-dozen surrounding jurisdictions to assist Endicott police.

"There's always something going on; it's a shame," said Brent Todd, 17, of Monroe Street, several blocks from the shooting scene.

One suspect, Jarvis Roberts, 22, of Brooklyn, was arrested less than a half-hour after the shooting report, apprehended a block away at North Street and Fillmore Avenue after neighbors saw him running through back yards.

The second man arrested was Kareem Thomas, 27, also of Brooklyn, who reportedly made his way south from the shooting scene to McDonalds restaurant on East Main Street just west of Harrison Avenue. Police said Thomas had called for and was waiting for a cab at the fast-food restaurant.

Roberts and Thomas were each charged with first-degree robbery, a felony. They were arraigned in Endicott Village Court and ordered held without bail in Broome County Jail.

"It sounded like a firecracker," said Rosemary Holobosky as she stood on the front porch of her Monroe Street home talking to her neighbor Adam Reardon. Holobosky said she heard "yelling and screaming" preceding the gunshot.

"I was going to go out and see, but I decided I better stay inside," she said.

Alicia Thorne of Fillmore Avenue said she saw one suspect running through back yards across from her home.

Still, Thorne said the neighborhood is quiet, but like other neighborhoods, it is not without its problems.

Police said three men forcibly entered an apartment at 802 North St., an eight-unit apartment house, where they threatened three victims in the apartment with a handgun.

Police said the trio stole an undisclosed amount of cash, jewelry and a cell phone.

As they ran from the apartment, running south on Harrison Avenue, one fired one shot at the victims, police said. A spent shell casing was found along the sidewalk near Harrison Avenue and Monroe Street.

A Postal Service carrier, on her regular rounds on Harrison Avenue, told police the three had tried to enter her postal vehicle, which was parked while she delivered the mail, police said. But they were unsuccessful in driving off in the vehicle.

Throughout the late morning and early afternoon, police combed the neighborhood, interviewing residents for information and searching yards for evidence.

Early in the investigation, Endicott Police Chief Gary O'Neill and police Capt. Michael Cox said there were differing reports of one to three shots fired. Cox said later it appeared only one shot was fired. Police would not disclose the caliber of the weapon.

Endicott police were joined by Binghamton, Johnson City and Vestal police, Broome and Tioga county sheriff's deputies, state police and Broome County District Attorney's Office investigators. Endicott Fire Department ambulance personnel also were called to the scene.
